t the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), the embrace of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has marked a turning point in how education is being delivered and received, offering significant transformations for students. As AI tools gain traction in various industries, the education sector—especially in institutions like UNIMAID—is evolving, bringing about changes that are both impactful and essential for modern learning. Students, in particular, are finding themselves at the center of this transformation, benefiting from personalized, efficient, and interactive academic environments.

AI’s influence on classroom learning at UNIMAID cannot be understated. One of the most significant changes brought by AI is the shift from one-size-fits-all teaching to more personalized learning experiences. AI systems, designed to track a student’s progress, can identify individual strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. As a result, students have reported improved understanding and retention of course material, leading to enhanced academic performance and greater satisfaction with their studies. “It’s like having a tutor available 24/7,” says Aisha, a final-year student studying Computer Science at UNIMAID. “AI tools provide support for me at any time I need, and it’s made studying much easier.”

The integration of AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants has also provided students with unprecedented access to academic resources and support. Students no longer need to wait in long lines or spend hours navigating websites to find information about courses, deadlines, or university services. These AI tools respond to frequently asked questions, help students navigate administrative tasks like course registration, and provide real-time feedback on assignments and exam results. This has not only made academic assistance more accessible but has also empowered students to take charge of their learning without unnecessary delays.

“I can now get answers to my questions immediately without waiting for office hours,” says Tunde, a third-year Engineering student. “The virtual assistants make it easier for me to track assignments and deadlines. It’s a real time-saver.”

Beyond classroom activities, AI’s impact is also evident in how students approach research. For those pursuing research projects, AI has proven invaluable in data analysis and literature review. The AI tools available at UNIMAID can quickly sift through large datasets, analyze trends, and generate insights that would typically take weeks or even months for a human researcher to uncover. This allows students to focus more on interpretation and analysis rather than the tedious task of data processing. Additionally, AI-driven tools are now capable of assisting in literature reviews, helping students quickly locate the most relevant and recent research articles in their area of study.

"This has allowed me to push my research forward at a much faster pace," says Fatimah, a graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences. "AI has made it easier for me to gather data and analyze it more efficiently, and I don’t feel overwhelmed by the vast amount of literature I need to review."

Such insights allow students to see where they are excelling and where they might need to devote more time and effort, encouraging self-regulation and independent learning.

While AI has undoubtedly brought many positive changes, the implementation at UNIMAID is not without challenges. One of the primary concerns among students is equitable access to AI tools. Not all students have the same level of access to technology, and this digital divide could lead to inequality in how effectively students can benefit from AI-assisted learning. Some students in rural areas, or those facing financial constraints, may not have the devices or internet connectivity needed to fully engage with AI resources.

“There are times when I wish I could use these AI tools more, but the lack of stable internet or access to devices is a challenge,” says Musa, a student from a remote community in northeastern Nigeria. “I feel like I’m at a disadvantage compared to other students who have better access.”

In response, UNIMAID has taken steps to ensure that all students can access AI tools. Efforts to provide affordable devices, internet access, and comprehensive training are being made to bridge this gap and ensure that no student is left behind.

Looking ahead, UNIMAID plans to expand its use of AI technologies even further. Plans are in place to implement virtual classrooms powered by AI, allowing students to interact with instructors and peers remotely, further enhancing the university’s ability to reach a broader student body. Additionally, AI-driven research projects and collaborative platforms are set to become central to UNIMAID’s future academic programs.

As the role of AI in education continues to grow, UNIMAID is committed to ensuring that both students and faculty have the necessary resources and training to thrive in a rapidly changing academic environment. However, it is equally important for the institution to remain mindful of the need for a balance between technology and traditional face-to-face interactions, which are vital to building interpersonal skills and maintaining a sense of community on campus.
